Tiwai Island - our home in the rainforest
Our home is part of the Gola-Tiwai Rainforest, Sierra Leone's first UNESCO World heritage site declared in 2025. Tiwai's dense forest covers 12 square kilometres in the centre of the Moa River. It’s home to 11 different species of primates and 135 birds - and is one of the last strongholds of the elusive pygmy hippo.
A key aspect of the Tiwai vision is the involvement of the local communities, eight riverside villages, of which Geima is one. We manage the reserve for the benefit of both wildlife and people.
Eco-tourism, which includes Geima Guesthouse, was part of the original Tiwai Island vision, and provides some employment and income for villages.
The story of Tiwai is inspirational. Always a Sierra Leonean gem - now recognised as part of the world's heritage.
