With the chief at Mapuma Village

Tiwai's communities preserving their forest heritage

There are eight village communities around Tiwai Island, all part of the scheme to preserve the forest and its wildlife. You can visit them all on a walk around the Tiwai Heritage Trail.

Each village has its own distinctive character. They have small farms growing staple foods including rice, coffee and a range of vegetables. They produce kola nuts and sell some to Karma Kola for the production of soft drink. Some of the villages have artisanal mines.

Boma is notable for having a woman chief. Geima is notable for its new guesthouse. The eight villages are:

Kambama

Boma

Nainiahun

Sahun

Jene

Giema

Mapuma

Segbewema

You can visit all the villages on foot walking the Tiwai Heritage Trail. And you can travel between some of them along the river: the picture above shows people waiting for an early morning ferryboat. There's more information about the trail and details of it are available here.
