Decision taken - we set to work!

We lost no time in starting work.

First thing was to agree with the village chief on the site, one that was close to other villagers for security, and that had a pleasing outlook.

As the rainy season had started, we focussed on clearing the site, and collecting the stones. The moulds were prepared to make the mudbricks and timber was cut. All the materials were stored ready to start work when the rainy season ended.

It was a whole-community effort, with input from people from neighbouring villages.

Meanwhile there was a lot to discuss.  We agreed on the number of guests our guesthouse would accommodate, the number of rooms, the type of roof, whether we would have solar energy, what kind of toilets, and we agreed on a veranda so our guests can sit outside in the shade.

We also appreciated the support and input from the management of Tiwai Island. As well as encouraging us, they agreed to help us with the training that we will need to welcome and cater for our guests. And we look forward to welcoming the guests they send!
